How are you so sure it is not a sponge? There are all sorts of sponges that come in all different shapes, sizes and colours that come into the tank. I have sponges growing on the underside of all manor of rocks and corals in my tanks.

Just a feeling. I dont really know if it isnt sponge but the coral has had so many problems I dont think its a sponge.

Why not take some pics and post them up here? That will be the best way to try and get an ID.

The coral will not grow from underneath in a spongy way, rather expand outwards by building more of a calcerous skeleton.
