so i was thinking about it and i was wondering if any monster keepers out here could give input...

wouldn't that be terrible if a small child fell into a monster catfish pond? like into one with a tiger shovelnose or one of those other giant mouths. i've thought of this before, that it would be dangerous to have children anywhere in the vicinity of a monster fish pond...

so what sort of safety precautions would you have for one of those? fences, lids, raised walls, etc.

mostly i'm just curious, but i know some people out here have given these issues serious thought!

I would be more afraid of the child drowning then being eated by any fish. You would basically treat it the same way as a regular pool.

I think the fish would be more scared then even a child It has no reason to attack something almost or bigger than it when it is fed well, oddballs may not be the place for this though I hear a fahaka puffer might do a bit of damage

Yeah. Kids drown.

I don't a monster fish will be able to tell the difference between a kids torso and an adults leg. Either way they'll run the hell away from it.

yeah - it'd be terrible if someone's poor fish choked and died on a small child that it couldnt swallow properly :D

Like i said to my mrs when she expressed a worry that her cats might get hurt by my electric catfish if they dipped a paw in its tank, they wont do it twice

yeh agreed with others, unless theyre breeding(unlikley)and they have a territory they wont do as much as swim past the child,

DD

 i mainly was just thinking of this in terms of the giant catfish! since we always warn that they'll eat any fish that can fit in their mouth, what else could one of these "monsters" eat? plus there are the tales of cutting open catfish in the Amazon and finding a four-year-old inside... perhaps just a "jungle" legend, but still!

i'd especially be worried if i ever decided to convert over an old swimming pool to a monster pond. it'd be really easy to do, but simultaneously easy for some stupid kid to think "oh, i should go swim in that!" i'd have a mbu puffer in mine... and i know my SAP isn't afraid of much and he's only a couple inches long!
:dunno:

(i asked in oddballs because this is where the big-fish owners tend to gather...)

that's a damn good thought... you've convinced me... I won't have any children...

But like mentioned above, I think drowning would be more of a threat than fish attacks. Personally I just maintain a personal rule that I don't allow children in the house, it's best that way for them as well as myself.
(Mine’s an indoor pond)
