Monochrome5's Planted Cube

For what it's worth, there were no roots on the moneywort. It just looked like stems and leaves curled in a J.

Oh, and my shipping was (directly quoted from the website) "PLANT ONLY next day air"

Grumble, grumble, that's disappointing then, I've received better through priority mail. The moneywort would've staightened out, but if you didn't feel comfortable and got fish out of the deal, you'll be ok. Yeah, I really wasn't loving aquariumplants.com last time I used them. I use Aquatic magic, the place from Singapore. When I heard that Aquabotonic had merged with aquariumplants, I was pleased as I always enjoyed ordering from Aquabotonic. Shame that you didn't have the best experience.

I PM'd you about the CO2, but I'll say it here. Did you do both canisters? You'll need to initially, then begin alternating the mix. You're not adding fish for a spell so if that dropchecker reads yellow, don't worry. It'll sort out when you start alternating the mix. The recipe from PARC is fine if you used the one for the Nutrafin system. I personally use 8-10 TBs of sugar, then 1/2 tsp of yeast, then warmish water to like a cm below the notch on the top. Others use different mixes.

PS: OT OMG, I totally love my lampeyes. So stunning.

Uh oh. I'm only using one canister. Why do I need to run two? It's a tiny tank... I was following the PARC Nutrafin walkthrough and it said just to do one. It says that one canister lasts a 30g tank 7 days, so I figured it would be more than enough for my little 8g.

Also, the PARC says to add fish within two or three days to help stabilize the tank... bad idea? I plan on two dwarf puffers and an otto (or two). Though I won't lie... I always thought tetras were stupid till I planted. Now I kinda want a gaggle of them haha.

How long has it been cycling?

You need 2 set up which you alternate re filling so that when one mix starts to die off the CO2 levels don't fluctuate to much.

Hope this helps.

Uh... 8 hours. Heh. I have two canisters, but only one is full currently. Do I fill them both at once? Or fill one when the other starts to die?

Best thing is to read Andy's thread in parc, he used 2 x 2 litre bottles linked via a T piece and filled one then the other 3 days later and changed them every week or two weeks on the same day he set them up so the flow of CO2 depleting in one would be made up by the other. Have a read it's a great write up, if you use bottles you can change them once a month, esp in an 8 gallon you could really stretch out the mix and have less injecting but will last longer by adjusting the mix and being 8 gallon will prob still be enough CO2.

You could also just use the canisters. I'll dig up my last CO2 tank. Has the CO2 plan in detail.

2 liters is so much yeast, so much eventual alcohol. That's the funniest part. You makin' da moonshine. Ah, now I know why Andy uses the two, 2 liters. That's a lot of moonshine. :hey:

In a tank this small is it viable to use the Nutrafin canisters on a 7 day schedule? One on for 7 days (fill the other day 6) then switch the other on for 7 days and repeat? Seems like a lot of CO2 based on the math in PARC... Especially because they say it's enough CO2 for a 30g tank.

It is totally viable to use two Nutrafin canisters and staggar there changing. I did one on a Saturday and the other on a Wednesday, but each canister went for a week. They were connected to the Rhinox via a T-connector. In this journal...

The first couple posts are hard to read, because they came out funny when the forum upgraded.

Dont see why not, keep forgetting its 8Gallons, yeah 2 nutrafins would do.

So I trimmed the plants today now that they've had some time to settle. Lost the rosefolia completely. It turned to mush almost instantly... Ugh. Everything else looks good though (I think). Pictures of the new fishies tomorrow!

All pruned up:

just a quick tip, those pygmy chain swords will loose there leave (as they are at the moment), bare with them, they are getting used to there new environment. Just remember to trim as they start to melt as you'll leave yourself open to algae blooms. Also i would recommend daily water changes for a week or 2 whilst this is happening.

Yeah I've been pruning and water changing every day. I keep thinning things out... It's getting scary in there. One thing though... that weeping moss from Lissette is going nuts. That stuff grows almost an inch a day. Sheesh.

Well, I'm glad that it's growing for you. It really stunk that my pelia became collared greens with the heat. I may send you some Anubias for your wood. They need another prune. Anubias are weeds & if I sent them to you, the CO2 may make them flower. I like it when plants flower.

:)

PEEEECHURS!!

These are my new best friends... 8 White Cloud Mountain Minnows. I know I was originally going for dwarf puffers, but due to issues with the supplier they wouldn't come in for at least a month and a half. I saw these little guys and fell in love with them. They're full of life. All over the tanks darting in and out of the leaves. Speedy little buggers - hard to get them still long enough for a picture.
