Mom Brought Some "Cycle" Today.

Okay, just to let you know, it's a waste of money. There is only one true way to INSTANTLY cycle a tank. That is to put already cycled media in the tank from a older, cycled tank. The bacteria can double their own numbers in less than 8 hours. So, if you put a small piece of sponge (or a small bag of gravel) into a new tank, with a fish or 2 (put them in immeadiatley when adding the media). Then wait a day or two (to make sure the numbers of bacteria are sufficient)you can add another fish. And you can keep doing that until your tank is fully stocked. Once it has been a week, there should be a sufficient number of bacteria in the new sponge/filter media that you can take the old sponge/whatever and put it back in the original tank. I do this every time I set up a tank. I have yet to have a spike in ammonia/nitrItes or nitrAtes.

Has anyone actually used this before? I used the old one to cycle my fish only marine tank and it seemed to work just fine. I can't fully remember how it works or the method I used because it was a while ago but I remember being very suprised. I think their argument much like that for live sand, is that the bacteria is in spore stage or somthing.

Annnywho, I have had good results with cycle. I hear the new verson, in a more triangle bottle is really good also.

I WILL Try it out anyway.

its the new stuff and i WONT add fish until the results come through.

even if it is a waste of time.

You can learn from your mistakes.

Yeah you have nothing to lose. As a said I have had good results personally so I can only go on experiance. Most people who comment on it in a negative way have never even tried it which I find quite weird.

I have used it and found it not helping at all. The idea in Knox213 post about adding some each week to prevent fish deaths is interesting too. It says to do that on the bottle but I am foolish enough to do water changes without using it and I also get no fish deaths. I suppose that if I spit over my shoulder with weekly water changes I would also not lose fish, but nobody would be encouraged to follow that example. It doesn't come in a bottle with fancy printing on the outside.

Ok Oldman.

I'll experment around with it.

Wait..

what if i put some into a liquid test kit?

JUST to see what comes up?

this is interesting. everyone says its a load of garbage but has anyone tested it in a controlled manor.
Knox, if you want to experiment with it and not risk any fish, why not set up a tank and a brand new filter...dose the tank with the "magic product" according to package directions (i imagine youd have to shake the bottle, even if it doesnt tell you to)...then add 1ppm ammonia (a reasonable amountt for bacteria in a bottle to process in a short time, if in fact, it works at all... and test for a few days. keep record of your results.
by adding ammonia and not fish, you do not risk the fishies. and if it works, HORRAY FOR YOU! you can get a light stocking if it processes as it should, and then slowly build the fish in numbers.
be sure to check the bottle for any sort of sell-by date or "manufactured" date (to help others in the future if it does work...they will get a feel for what "shelf-life" to look for for the stuff to be worth buying).
im not convinced it will work, but if i had some laying around, id want to test it out too.
let us know how it goes.
cheers
