I rescued a female molly that was, of course pregnant. The tank has lots of plants and places for her to swim around and also that fry can hide in.
The inevitable fry were born and to my surprise, she didn't seem to be interested in eating them. She would just look at them and swim right past. I did feed more frequently because I read it is better for the fry to eat more often, so I figured maybe she wasn't that hungry. One evening after I turned off their aquarium light, I sat on the couch and watched them. Lots of little babies came out into the open and Ms. Mom went along the bottom and sucked them right up. This happened every night until there were a final six that were smart enough to stay away from her until they were too large to eat.
So, my question is, has anyone else ever observed this behavior? That a fish only eats fry in the dark? Swam right past them in the light, but as soon as the lights went out, gobble gobble gobble.
