Mollies look like mateing but look male!

hey,

I have 2 mollies and ever since I got them they look like they are mateing.. But im sure they are both male. They keep rubing against each other.. and they have been doing this for a long time now... but one does not look pregnant and im wondering if its something else? They also seem to chase each other sometimes around the tank or at other times just rub or swim next to each other.

I would really like to know what this behavior is ....

Male mollies usually flare their dorsal fins when they approach females. I wouldn't worry too much because if they are both male or both female they won't hurt each other. Probably just play-fighting. Are they quite young?

Hey,

Not to young, they are around 8 motnhs to a year old. Its weird they both flare out their fins... and rub against each other. im pretty sure they are both men... even tho ones a bit bigger than the other but that could be their age?!

The females have anal fins which hang down in front of their tails. Males have a modified anal fin (gonopodium) which is single and poits backwards. Hope this helps.

Thanks... no im pretty sure they are men... they have a little thing under there belly pointing towards their tail... im pretty usre they are both male... so what do u think there behavior is if they turn out to be both male... ive looked at them today and they still are rubing against each other and following each other!

lol im getting worried. .. u no what... maybe they are.... thay prob are desparate I think I might need to get a few females for them!

lol If you get some females make sure to get 2 females for each male otherwise the males will chase them to exhaustion. How big is your tank? I read your other topic about fry and mine have all lived when left in the main tank.

I don't have the exsact measurements but its really quite big.. lol yeh... i want to get more fish but seeing as I have fry at the mo I want them to become adults then i will start to buy more fish again... get what i mean?
