Hi agen

does William make u a mod or can any mod make you a mod.
only an admin can make someone a moderator. It's done from the Admin Control panel. Where you can change someones usergroups. Unless he wrote a custom hack moderators have a very limited amount of changes they can make to a users information.

For example at my site I've made it so Supermods can alter someones avatar(because they have to be approved) but they cannot change titles or usergroups.
They can ban(perm or temp) but cannot unban anyone. They've got a few other tools I've given them.

I'm an administrator on a very large site.
We get this question all the time from people so I have 2 responses.
The first one is this

I get tons of requests from folks wanting to be moderators and I thought I'd post what we look for in a mod.

A moderator must be very active in the forum they want to moderate. You should be in a lot of threads in a positive way. Just tossing a "smilie" in as a response won't cut it. Helpful responses to technical questions or good thought given to items in discussion on the non-technical forums is a must do.

We also look for behavior patterns. We keep track of warnings and stuns that happen to your ID. So, you ask to be a mod and you have 95 warnings 6 trillion stuns, well, there may be a problem thinking that being a mod will go "poof" and you now will adhere to the board rules. Nope, it's not gonna happen.

Longevity helps too. Being on here a long time will actually count as a positive for you. Now, with that said, newer members can still make it but it usually requires a moderator to make the nomination for you to become a moderator.

When you become a moderator, some things change. One item is you must remain neutral to topics and not get too involved in opinions as to contribute to flame wars. That will be bad if you are heavily in a debate and suddenly realize that you need to lock the thread. Bad situation and that?s why we ask that you be friends with your friends off the forums but in the forums, you are a moderator.

So, participation, behavior, longevity, and maturity all are considered when making a new moderator. A recommendation from a moderator doesn't hurt your chances either.

If I actually have a need I'll usually take applications from people where they need to tell me a little about themselves and why they think they'd be a good mod as well as what they belive it takes to be a good mod. Then me and the other admins usually review it.

It can be a tedious thing and if you accepted all the offers from people to become mods you'd wind up like another site I used to be on where there would be like 15 mods online and 5 members.

some people had just end up posting 'lol' or something to every post just to get their post count higher.

Yeah, I think the only time I had a one word (or smiley) post was when I was posting pics. Give advice, ask questions, and work your way up  (not directed at anyone, just general advice to all)

Actually,on forums such as this the mods may have less freedom. They need to be polite and helpful to all members. And they have to be extremely careful not to be drawn into flaming. That often means keeping personal thoughts and feelings in check.I have moderated on a large site and while it was often fun,it was also very difficult at times.Mods put in a lot of time and energy and the only real reward in the end is the pleasure of helping others :)

Hey Bea/\/.
If its the knowledge you want that is easy. Start at your library and read everything you can get your hands on. While you are reading and have a question ask here to see if anyone can help you. Also try differnent types of tank set ups as there is nothing like hands on experience to give you knowledge. It may take time but in the end it is worth it. It makes you a better fish keeper, which your fish will like, it also allows you to help others. Just remember that no one knows everything and that is why this place is such a great place because if there is something you are having trouble with then someone here will know how to help. So if you want the knowledge you have a lot of options such as the pinned articles here, other internet articles, library, bookstore and the great people here.
Good luck in your pursuit. :)

you didn't read the paragraph I posted then. being a mod isn't really a lot of fun. in fact on my baord when my mods wnat to have some fun or get themselves involved in a debate they have to sign in under another name. Staying neutral as a mod is important and difficult to do. It also requires a high level of maturity.
