I can't upload an image to a thread that is running at the following link. I have read the threads on uploading images and they did not help.

you click on Add Reply, the page loads up but there isn't a button or link for uploading attachments. There is a small icon (insert image button) above the text window but it wants a web address for the image. I want to upload the image from my PC, not the web. I've been pulling my hair out all day because of this. Any ideas why it isn't doing what it should be?

I also can't upload gif images. I am not sure if that is normal either.

you need to use an external image host such as www.imageshack.us and then take the direct link they give you and post it here

I presume its to save space on this server, and imageshack is easy enough to use

www.photobucket.com is another good site if you want to store lots of images online

only in certain forums is this option available. It's easy to get a photobucket account. Upload your photo(s) there and copy/paste the

photobucket is really easy, even i could do it lol you upload pics into an album on there((yes from pc too)) and copy and paste them here( after u have clicked instert image)

I don't want to store lots of pics online. I just want to put a diagram on a thread for someone to look at.
if they want to save space why can I add pics in the hobbies forum. Very strange

I think it might depend on which sub-forum you are in...

If i goto reply to thread in Planted tanks then i get the option to add an attachment but in the inverts section i dont.

As you look down the main list of forums there are icons to the left next to the names. I can add pictures to the ones with the _| shape icon and can't add pictures to the ones with the "" icons. I am using the default skin, i think the icons may be different with other skins.

too much mucking around trying to send it somewhere and then bringing it back. Why don't they just allow you to put images on any section of the forum directly from your PC. It's ridiculous.

It's an issue of the amount of space taken up on the server, if my terminology is correct. This space costs money, so not all of the areas of this forum have this feature.

I use Imageshack, which is pretty easy to use considering I am not the most computer savvy guy around. I use it for whatever forum I post on, in whatever area.

yes but if it is a space issue what is the difference between me putting 10 pictures in the photo section, and 10 picture elsewhere on the site?

Also why can't I send images from my pc to someone via private message? Most people empty their message box quite frequently so its not going to take up huge amounts of space that way. And the message box can only hold a small amount of stuff anyway. So why can't I send a small picture to someone from my pc to them in their PM box?

And why don't gif images work on here?

Here we go, me trying to answer computer tech questions. Tell you what I can do to help get you some answers, I'll bring this up in the mod's section. Some of the mods know more about the way these things work than I'll ever know.

I'll hazard a guess, that either it's an issue of space costing more money, or a site program upgrade costing more money. It could have nothing to do with any of those things, I'm a fish guy, not a computer guy.

well that's fair enough. If you could bring it to the attention of the other moderators I would appreciate it.
I can understand the financial side and not wanting to pay for extra storage space but I consider my point about 10 pics in the photo section vs 10 pics elsewhere, to be valid if they use that excuse.
Anyway thankyou for your help and I shall continue pulling my hair out until something happens

Well Colin, I think William might be the only one who could really answer this question definitively. I'll chime in with what I know here though.

First off, as Tolak indicated, pictures require far extra space for storage and almost as importantly, a lot of upload bandwidth out of the server. Bandwidth really costs money. Text is cheap, tiny low-res avatars are cheap, hotlinking is cheap, hosting pictures on the forum is expensive. Be that as the case, something tells me the forum is setup to only allow initial picture posting to keep image hosting costs low.

Second, remember that the forum is run via Invision Powerboard software which is basically a forum shell which the Administrator (William) can set the skins, colors, buttons, bells and whistles, etc so that it looks the way we see it in our browsers. Invision may not have actually coded the option to host images in replies. Or as other mods mentioned, it may only be possible ot host images in replies in certain subforums where William has turned this option on.

Perhaps another mod will come by with more knowledge on the subject (this thread is linked in the mod forum) but if not, your best bet would be to PM William.
