Hi,

I have just bought an ro filter and was wondering how people mix the salt?

At present I am using a large plastic container bringing it up to the temperature of the main tank then adding the salt to this.I then leave it for 24 hours with a pump and spray bar attached to mix it.

Is this the best way of doing it?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks.

Stef

I use a powerhead this will mix your salt better than the air method your currently using.
I used a large empty salt bucket to do my waterchanges with. I weighed out the amount of salt using small cheap plastic kitchen scales to the proper SG I required. Then a heater and a powerhead did the mixing.
Does your RO unit have a DI pod attached, if not it may be worth investing in such to take that last bit of crap out of your municipal supply water.
Sometimes you can be a bit low on certain chemical aspects so measure your Mg, Alk and Calc in your bucket as well as in your tank to see how they are being used up then adjust accordingly.

Get the big 5 gallon red bucket from Home Depot.

Place powerhead in the bottom and attach heater to the side

Fill with RO/DI water leaving room near the top for adjustment.

Add sea salt (for me, 5 1/2-6 cups brings me to s.g. 1.026)

Mix for at least 1-2 days.

Check s.g. and adjust accordingly.

Thanks for the replies.

I am a little confused however regarding using a powerhead instead of a submersable pump and spraybar. Doesnt a powerhead work in the same way?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I have taken your advice and bought a Di unit and tds meter.
