The case of the missing rasbora...

I've been down on my luck lately - I rehomed one of the angels because it started attacking my other, I introduced two new cories a month ago, lost both of them, finally lost a dwarf gourami to an internal parasite (colisa lalia disease) yesterday.... now here we go...

One of my rasboras is missing. I noticed the shoal (three black neons, three little red rasboras) was down to five so I stripped the tank... pulled out all the decor.

I looked in the filter. Nothing.

I vacuumed the gravel. No body.

I looked all over the floor, behind the tank, in my drawers to see if I had an escape artist turned suicide mission.. no body.

I've got to get an ammonia kit now for sure... any other suggestions? Ideas where the body might be?

Maybe it was a murder? I've combined tanks, because this is what I have left now:

1 angel (1.5yrs of age)
1 honey gourami
1 opaline gourami
3 (2?) rasbora
3 black neon
1 clown pleco
1 bronze cory
3 kuhli loach
2 bleeding heart tetra
appx. 30 gallon tank, 40 gallon filter in it.

any possible culprits? I was told the angel might ear little fish when I got them ... however they were over 1" and she hasn't eaten any of the other fish in over a year of keeping her.

I'd be satisfied without the recovery of a body if I could at least come up with a theory & motive for the murder... haha.

I doubt it's a murder, but dead fish can be eaten really quickly by the others. You're unlikely to find a body!

Sounds suspicious. If I were you, I'd seperate each fish out and interigate each. It may have even been a colaboration amoung a group of the fish. Possibly the 3 kuhli loaches are part of a mafia organization. They are good at hiding bodies.

Sorry about your fish. Can you get a few additional rasboras to create a stronger school of them?

Did you use a med for the internal parasites.

Do you mean internal parasites or internal bacteria infection.

If he did you have internal parasites and he was in the main tank at once point, the whole tank wants medicating.

Alright, the gourami had "dwarf gourami disease" - http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=1139 which is a virus. I read the entire FAQ here: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/FWsubwebindex/dwfgdis.htm for information about colisa lalia & diseases. That's what I came up with because my fish has had the same lethargy and "rocking" motion as described by other sources there. It had had "swelling" on its side for almost a year prior to death that I eventually figured was a tumor, it didn't appear to affect it at all so I let him go.

I moved it out of the tank a month ago when it started laying on the bottom of the tank. It had looked ragged for months and didn't have the same energy the other fish did; it eventually stopped eating. I didn't medicate it, I just let it go because I figured there wasn't much I could do for it.

Ok.

Bacterial then not internal parasite.

I would just do some water changes and keep an eye on your fish.

Hi! Have a tropical fish tank (65 litres) with 2 rainbow dwarf tetras, 8 rummy nose tetras, 6 black tetras, 5 neon tetras, 7 ember tetras 4 cherrry barbs, 2 golden apple snails and 4 shrimps. But think I have got an internal bacterial problem with the cherry barbs. I did have 5 and they seemed to be getting fatter but one of them was much fatter than the rest and then got an open wound which seemed to have 'burst' open from the inside out. It kept swimming etc ok, was maybe a bit quieter than normal. Treated it (meaning the whole tank) with Interpet 9, it didn't seem to get worse or better so decided to see how it was the next morning and make a decision the next morning but it disappeared!! I think the other cherry barbs may have eaten it and are getting fatter too!! Just read the forum comments and have joined. Didn't know about adding the salt. Is this ordinary table salt or special stuff? Does anyone know how much to add to 65 litre tank and will it affect the other inhabitants? The last medication of Int.9. was appromimately a month ago. Thanks for any advice. amazing creatures.

Your tanks overstocked can you post water stats please.

What do you feed the fish.
Was scales sticking out.
Was the open wound an injury or caused by the bloating.

You can add salt with neon tetra's and snails.
