Would a standard 6 foot tank be wide enough? Or does it absolutely have to be a 2 foot wide one?

They can grow to 18", at least to 12", so I would say you do need a very wide tank for it to happily live in there, be comfortable and be able to turn around.

Yes that's my concern. That's why my 'dream tank' is one of the super wide ones. But there's dreams and then there's reality. I think that the standard ones are about 18inches wide. So I was wondering if one of these beauties would be able to lead a happy life in a 6' standard or if its really not recommended. You know - thriving vs surviving. I want my fishies to thrive!

Thanks!

Well if they are 18 inches wide it would be ok. If they are less, I'm sure it still could be done - they don't always reach 18" anyway.

75gal is the usual minimum tank for a full grown sailfin.....Probably the most important part is the filtration as these guys produce a tremendous amount of waste.
