I used to breed leopard geckos and they make great pets.
I agree about corn snakes being good for beginners.
Don't get a royal python, no matter how beautiful they look. They are really unpredictable. I had to take one off display in work as it kept striking at the glass. It's bitten me twice this week, not due to carelessness, but we have to try and get it to tolerate people otherwise it's never going to get a good home
Bearded dragons are also great for beginners if you have plenty of room for them. They are so friendly and love to be petted IME. I spend hours with my beardie sitting on the sofa getting a fuss.
Maybe you could consider a Chameleon. They can make great pets and need a tall viv rather than a long one so may be better if you're short of space.
