I got my Sunset Platy from the store just about 3 days ago and noticed now that she has 2 little white spots on one side. She rubs up against my decorations and stays isolated from the other platies. I think it may be Ichthyophthirius (Ich). On the opposite side of the little white spot I see some little black spots that appear to be frys, because she is kinda fat.... I took a picture of the white spots, and I was hoping if someone could tell me if it is ICH?

HiYa and welcome dc

I don't think thats ich - which is more salt grain size dots/spots on the fish...

The fish is obviously stressed if its rubbing and it looks like its fins are clamped...It looks like it could be some bacterial infection....

Are all other fish OK?

Can you give us any tank parameters (ammo., nitrite etc)?

Does the shop have a return policy?

And what side of the pond are you? as people will recomend different remedies depending on where you live :/

:)

Sorry for the slow response, i posted that last night at 1:00 am. All the other fish are OK.
I dont have enough money yet to buy a water testing kit, so i dont know any of the water levels.
Im from Washington. I got it at Petco, they have a 15 day return policy with a water sample and the dead fish.

I just woke up, put the fish and a water sample in separate bags, and i am going back to the fish store in a little... they will test it.

Did they ask you to bring the fish back?

If not you may be causing the fish unneccessary stress by moving him again :/

I'd take the water sample and this picture unless they said they'd replace him for you?

:)

The platy with the white spots is still alive, but there was another one that was being continuosly chased and harassed by the male. So, i have one dead platy caused by stress, and another with white spots

With many fish you need a few females to each male or as you said they can effectively be harressed to death....

I take your lfs will replace this one?

Are you taking the other to show them aswell?

:)

There was 3 females, but he had to harass the one.....
Petco will replace the dead fish, but not the sick one.
Like you said, if i bring the sick fish in to the store it could cause her to stress and die, and i dont want that :(
but i could bring in the picture....

It wouldn't hurt - see what they say....

If its that ill when you've just got it and the water tests fine then imho they should replace that aswell :/

Good luck with it m8 and let us know how you get on

:)

Could be due to poor water quality high nitrite or ammonnia levels will cause this problem, i would recommend a testing kit asap and change 25% of the water every couple of days if the test are in dangerous zones. But i would recommend a water change anyway, sounds like a skin parasite infection, Are the spots fluffy looking? how many are there?

How long have you had your tank up and running?
How many fish do u have in tank?
What are they?

I got back from my LFS, they tested the water and said everything was perfect.
The white spots are fluffy looking, and there appear to be 2 of them, one larger in size.
The pet store gave me a treatment that i have already applied, and i hope to see results.
I dont want to lose another one, especially to some dumb disease.

The tank has only been running since last friday (7/11/03)

There were 4 Sunset Platies, 3 female, one male, and one algae eater.
