I'm setting up my fist fish tank and I was wondering, would it hurt the fish if their tank was sitting up on top of the microwave? The appliance doesn't get hot when used but I was wondering if the microwaves being emitted might harm my fish.

Personal i have no idea, but this sounds silly to me and would avoid it myself.

Not sure...

However, my main worry (because im a worrier) would be about keeping a tank on top of an electrical appliance. Although the front of the microwave is pretty set up to be splashed about a bit, i wonder if water down the back of it would be an issue.

I'd say this was a bad idea. Microwaves have vents in them. Mine has vents on the top and warm air does come out of this so blocking it with a tank will be bad.

Also the metal casing is pretty flimsy and only really designed as an outer skin for the device, not for holding heavy stuff like a tank! Maybe if you're keen on a tank in the kitchen then a sturdy shelf above the microwave would be suitable?

if your using a sturdy shelf stick the microwave on that not the tank

Your worry is not with the waves itself as microwaves are designed so that no waves are emmited outside of the cooking area.

Like someone mentioned you have to worry aboutt he electrical water mix with the risk of splashes etc.

You also dont want to cover up vents etc as you dont want to blow a fuse in ur microwave by overheating.

Hope this helps
Even if it is mostly a summary!!!

Good luck locating your tankl!

NEVER place your fish tank over any electrical appliances.

Too dangerous. If the tank leaks or if you spill water when you perform water changes, then you have a greater chance of damaging the microwave or even worse, electrocuting yourself.

FYI, the microwaves remain inside the unit. If any microwaves escaped, it would pose a danger to any living thing. Plus a good lawsuit to the microwave manufacturer.

Agreed, the fact that there are microwaves inside the appliance should not worry you or anyone else, the worry is from electrocution or destruction of an electrical appliance stored underneath a body of water that you're constantly monkeying with ;)
