My city lost their lfs during the pandemic and we had been without for awhile. A new one opened up this past month and I've finally got around to visiting.

And I... may have brought some new friends home unplanned.

They're in quarantine for the time being, I'd like to monitor them since they're freshly imported.

I have them sitting in a container in one of the tanks for time being, until i can tell if the heater i had in storage is working or not properly. Gave them some frozen brine shrimp while they wait and they ate right away.

I can't get over their derpy faces

That's a curious pick up, with a face only a catfish lover could love. They're supposed to be very fun to keep, and to have a lot of character. I'm looking forward to you keeping us informed on how they are in your tank.

They’re very attractive when you get a chance to see them. Unfortunately, they hide most of the time, only coming out for food or to devour small fish. I kept mine with neons, and every morning when I turned on the lights I noticed the school getting smaller and smaller and telltale bulges in the cat’s stomachs.

Hahaha yeahhhh that's probably why I fell in love. They got that face like there's no thoughts in their brains. But they're way too cute. They're very tiny at the moment, barely over 1.5 inches tops on the largest one.
Planet catfish says they're possibly 2 different species in my mix, undescribed species from Columbia. But given temperature range ideals for them, so i know what tank they'll be going in once they're clear from quarantine.

100% an unplanned purchase, but I would have regretted not walking out with them. I was the first person to buy them and I bought all 4 they had lol

This is good to know, regarding the tetra thing. That eliminates a couple tanks for them 😅 no to the tanks with ember tetras or Reed tetras. But temperature rules those out now too luckily. The tank they're going in doesn't have many too small.

But yeah was aware I was likely buying a fish I'd never see again 🤣 that's usually the case with oddball catfish. But I don't mind that, I love seeing that. So far in their QT tank I'm seeing them dart around the leaf litter and huddle under the leaves and it has me floored over how cute it is.

They do like to hide, it's so cute

I should be getting their ich meds tomorrow. Can see the ich in the 2nd photo, big spot on the nose area

They take dry food well, though they're small babies right now and even standard size bug bites are hard for them to swallow lol

They're all just stomach lol

They're handling the ich medication well (half dosed malachite green with acriflavine for secondary bacterial infection).

These would be my first foray into non-armoured catfish. Every catfish I've had prior has been either callichthyidae or loricariidae.

Oh wait, I forgot about this lady, she would be my first non armored cat 🙃 I'm a scatterbrain. Forgot about the banjo, probably because I rarely see her 🤣

Poor dude and his ich. This one has been swimming at the surface today and he's the most covered.

More i look, the less I'm convinced this is ich. I am not 100% sure what it is, they're so small so it's hard to see exactly what I'm looking at, but they're yellow spots, some of them seem almost like a blister type bump, others just a bump. And this guy is getting worse despite ich meds.

They're little, it's hard to really see what the spots are.

I might have to change my approach and try salt instead with them. They may respond better.

So cute! I've been tempted by similar? species but either didn't have a tank for them or a QT. I've read something about judging what some catfish can eat by half the length of its whiskers, EEK! Or, maybe like you chubby 1, the length of its stomach

Good luck on your ich treatment...or whatever it is. Malachite seems like a good tx for some "other things" too. Not a bad choice.

I can't wait for more pic & vids!

The width of their mouth is about as wide as their head. Very big mouths, but they're adorable regardless. Well, to me they are. My husband is questioning my judgment on what cute is lately.

Should see some Google photos of their mouths, they're funky looking

This is interesting

I opted to remove the meds last night, I ended up with more of them swimming at the surface.
I did a 100% water change and dosed aquarium salt instead and they're are no longer at the surface and seem to be behaving better.

This was before behavior with the meds.

Thus far still not seeing much improvement either using salt. No adverse reactions, but also not any improvement.

They like sitting in the floating plants a lot
