I bought a Pineapple swordtail quite some time ago that appears to have a ran together mickey mouse by his back end. I didn't think to much of it because it was kind of blurry. But then he mated with my red velvet sword female and she had 19 babies as a result. They are now almost 9 weeks old and quite a few of them have very distinct, definite mickey mouse patterns towards their back end that look exactly like the mickey mouse's on mickey mouse platies. I'm not sure how common this is for swords to have as I have never seen or heard or been able to find anything about swords with mickey mouse patterns just platies having them. I am wondering how common this is?? If anyone has ever seen it before or heard of it happening? If it happens quite a bit and I just have not heard of it or if its somewhat rare. I am aware that swords and platies are in the same genus and do have the ability to breed. But like I said I have never known of swords or crosses with mickey mouses. Wondering how common it is for them to have offspring when swords and platies interbreed also. I have pictures of them too if anyone would like to see them. Any advice or comments would be appreciated..thanks.

Platies and swordtails are able to intermix and breed together. So it is possible that your Pinapple Swordtail mated with a Mickey Mouse Platy, something like that. Either way one of your fish must have breed with a Mickey Mouse platy and they have now transffered the mickey mouse pattern through the genes. Congrats on the cool fry! I have been wanting to try a platy and swordtail cross.

Some pictures would be cool to see!!

Do you know how common it is for them to come out with mickey mouses?? Or have you ever heard of that? I have seen and heard of swords and platies mixing but haven't seen or heard of the mickey mouse being on the swordtail mix as a result. His parents or grandparents must have been a swordtail and a platy that mixed. I know for positive that his babies were from my red velvet and not from any of my platies as I seperated her, then she gave birth and they are the only batch that we had at the time. They have been in a seperate tank since they have been birthed. The only other babies that are with them are 2 oddballs. I am really excited about them. Every pet store and website or place hasn't really heard of swordtails having the mickey mouses when they cross. I'm sure its happened before but I don't think its very common.

Here is a picture of the dad and babies....they aren't very good quality pictures and do not show the mickey mouse or colors as distinctly as I would have liked but they show the fish.

Very interesting...

I've seen Mickey Mouse Swords for sale on aquabid a few times - but they do seem to be pretty rare...

Going by the photo of your male and the fact that some of the fry have the proper M.M. pattern it looks like some of the fry may develop into very special fish...

Good luck with them and please keep us updated :)

I'm so excited. They are neat looking I think. I will try and keep you posted. :D

I have male swordtails that have a black line running on their tails. I have 4 males that are like that. They are very interesting looking fishes.

one or two of my swordtail fry seem to be developing the mickey mouse pattern too, although it's hard to tell. I hope so, because yours look really beautiful! congradulations! :good:

They are not common but I picked some up at a club auction this summer. Unfortuantely I only have a single female left and she was a juvenile when I lost the others. As you say, the body color on them was a lot like a pineapple sword.
