The light fitting that your are looking at is the same as Navarre and I both have. They are more commonly called Aquabay, Lowbay or Growbay lights (depending on where you buy them). Yes they're ugly but they do the job and, like i've done, you can remove the ballast from the unit and wire it remotely so that it reduces the hanging weight. You could even discard the housing completely and just buy a reflector instead.
Another bit of information i'd like to add is that it is possible to run multiple bulbs off a single ballast as long as you:
a) Wire them in series, not in parallel
B) Do not exceed the total wattage of the ballast and get as close to the wattage of the ballast as possible
In short, you can run 2 x 250w off a single 500w ballast, 1 x 250w and 1 x 150w off a single 400w ballast, 2 x 150w off a single 300w ballast and 2 x 75w off a single 150w ballast. Good to know if you're in my position with a 400w ballast and only a 40" x 12" x 18" tank to illuminate
Also went to my lfs yesterday, to see if he would like an empty 6x2x21" tank and 6ftx2x1 and a 4x3x2 and asked what i`d like for them..
I cheekly said i`d like a series 3 halide setup.... he then said hmmm i have one out back.. 2nd hand i was like really!! so im snapping them up at a £100 once he has picked up my empty tanks..
