Probably a touchy subject with some people on here but what are people's views with regards to mercy killing of sick fish?

One of my Guppy's seems to be a White Spot Carrier, she seems to come out in white spot every week or so, and she seems to pass it on to 1 other fish each time around and they normally die from this a bit like Mark Fowler a HIV carrier passing it on to others and they die from it. So far I have lost 6 fish to her passing HIV (White Spot) on to them. Whats best to do with her? there is not a spare tank for her to go in alone so she is either left in there to gradually kill the rest or?

Does she need to be put out of her misery or would that be harsh if she is not suffering but killing others?

In ragards to mercy killing our animals, I'm all for it.

If there's nothing that can be done to help them and they suffer then I would do it.

In your case though, it's just white spot. Healthy fish don't die from it nor ever get it. I would try and resolve as to why you have fish with a weakened immune system that contracts it in the first place.

Can you get some Coppersafe ? You dose once and it lasts in the tank for 30 days. Do weekly water changes and redose the water put back in. I would try that first.

Whitespot can be caused by stress and a weak immune system.
How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
How long are you using the whitespot med for.
Try soaking some flakes in garlic juice it meant to boost a fish immune system.

I agree you don't flush fish its an awful death they are living creatures and deserve some respect.

It's only a guppy, just lob it down the loo

Dumb ideas like that are what make fishkeepers unpopular with environmentalists and those AGAINST animal cruelty. Firstly, a guppy may be inexpensive, but it's life is most certainly not cheap. Would you say the same if that guppy was $500/€600? Being flushed down the toilet is a terrible way to die, imagine your lungs starting to burn, you're feeling very sick already, everything aches, you're being suffocated. That's what happens to a guppy flushed down the toilet. And, if by some chance the fish survives, maybe it was a pregnant guppy, they could become an invasive species, and for something small as a guppy it may not seem like much, but it could WREAK HAVOC on the environment, by collapsing the food cycles and such, and DESTROYING the ecosystem. Think before you act.

So her passing it on to the others isn't whats killing them? How would you go about building up a Guppy's immune system or do I need to put her in a training tank and feed up her on a strong vit c diet?

She is only a Guppy yeah but she has Survived everything from my past master tank and been through 3years with me traveling from one part of London to the next and then on to Kent, she has top respect but if she is in pain then I will whack. She's in a 60litre training tank with built in power head, like I say though she picks up white spot every so often then another Guppy will catch it from her that will die and she will lose the spots, strangely though none of the Endlers ever catch it only the other Heinze Guppy's and a couple of Tetras.

Make sure that:
A: You're not feeding the cheapest fish food
B: Your water is clean, you may want to get test strips to know
C: If they are sick, then you may want to use malachite green to treat the whitespot.

Been feeding them Nutrafin, the water quality is good and all the necessary changes made when needed even put my Betta in the other week when I thought the White Spot had finally gone and he is doing great, full colour and everything, been medicating with Protozin.

I normally don't get into pissing contests but this comment really pisses me off.

Get off from a fish aquarium forum if you feel the need to show how heartless you are when someone posts about a fish you deem not worthy of life. There's a difference between starting a thread about how you feel about a certain fish but to come into one that is started from someone that loves his fish and saying that is wrong.

If this person didn't care about this fish that's "just a guppy" then he wouldn't have taken the time to post to find help and answers.

I'd absolutely love for you to put your big badass fish that are the only ones worthy of life into one of my tanks so I can see your face as they disappear. (And no, your fish won't do crap or kill mine so don't try it) I'd feel bad for your fish but not you.

Give your head a shake man. I hope this was just a stupid comment like we all make at times and it doesn't happen again because that wasn't right.

OP, sorry to derail your thread. I sincerely apologize, that just bothered me.

You will have to treat the whole tank and raise temp to 30 once you added the med.
Plenty of aeration as med reduce and the high temp will reduce 02 in the water.
Done well to have a guppy that long.
Good luck.
Shouldn't really keep guppys and betta togther as the betta will nip there fins or even kill them.

someone please tell me what lmfao means.i know more about fish than computer lingo.
