Meet Lord Damage The Mantis Shrimp

Good video to show that:
1) a mantis shrimp, as a hitchhiker, can vanquish your tank inhabitants during the night

2) should be in a species tank

3) has chelae that can split your finger to the bone

4) are very colorful and interesting to watch. SH

My LFS has one of these in stock, much to the dismay of the guy who runs the marine department
Eveytime this guy goes on holiday the staff order some weird and wonderful stuff that they can never sell on, they had a 5" polkadot grouper for almost 5 months before they got rid of it for £5 to someone who had a huge tank and felt sorry for it.

The Mantis is in a tank of his own with a chuck of LR and looks beautiful, gets no end of comments from the public, especially when they're told what they do :p

Ahhh, thumbsplitters! Definitely not for everybody, but very interesting if kept in their own tank, and you respect what they are capable of doing. My LFS had one in-stock for a couple weeks, a special order for some folks over at Purdue University, also saw a beauty at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. I have heard that they can chip away at live rock to fix it to their liking, and have been known to break the glass of the tank they are in if it is not of adequate size.

Cool video, thanks for sharing.

:S I wanna get rid of mine. It clicks no end. He also ate one of my Cerith snails last week..... :-(

I like the video though. They kind of freak me out somewhat. Not for me. :p

I didnt mean to show those things but they are all very true and should be noted.. There is pretty much no other live stock you can keep with a Mantis Shrimp.. I had coral with Lord Damage and even clicked at that all day so I had to takke the coral out.. His name is Lord Damage for a reason :p

You are right there, you have to have respect for them because they are highly intelligent animals, and yes they can chip rock very easily, ive seen it because they do it all day, Lord Damage was my 4th mantis.. And yes they CAN break glass and NO would I ever keep one in a glass tank.. Lord Damage and the smaller mantis shrimps I have had before him have all been in acrylic tanks.. I could post alot of links to other forums of people who have had they're glass broken, bottom line is that its too risky..

If you havent relized yet, Im a pretty big fan of mantis shrimps.

I think you could easily keep one in s species tank witha volume of 10-15 gallons. They can grow quite large though over time but they rarely travel very far from the burrow.
They also have the best vision known in the animal kingdom, they are almost impossible to suprise.

could you have several specimens in a single tank (say a 48x12 footprint)? or would one mantis always want the entirety of the space available?
