What is good and cheap to use as a medium for growing plants in???
i have read that straw can be used is this ok?

Well, if he's serious about growing plants, he should prob. go with a flourite/gravel mix, or just pure flourite. (or an alike product, such as eco-complete or ADA)

I used 2 inches Flourite and then about an inch of mixed with existing gravel I already had in the tank.
