Me Khullies

Kuhlis can get almost white when under stress or startled but usually they'll go back to their normal, darker coloring within a few minutes or hours. Occasionally I see mine do it when they get startled.

Mine does not get as dark as the normal kuhlis even when not stressed. It's just about the same color as the one shown or a pinch darker. The other kuhlis have shunned it from the start. It was always the loner until it teamed up with the black kuhlis. I also noticed that mine has the same large dark area around the tail with just the start of a stripe. They could almost be twins. I had two or three that were that way in the batch they came from but lost all but the two regular ones and this one. It's also accepted the new black kuhli with no problem. The other kuhlis - normal ones - don't mingle with the black kuhlis or this one at all other than eating. To me, that seems odd in itself.

I used to think the paler of my Khullies was being shunned because I never saw him out with the others even at feed time. So I tried to observe him in the conditions they say Khullies prefer, so one early morning with no light on in the tank & just one table lamp on the other side of the room providing just enough light to see into the front of the tank, I went to see whether it would be out & there it was joining in & doing exactly what all the others where doing happy as could be. My thinking is, possibly this colouring make Khullies of this type more sensitive to light. So if like me you sometimes get up silly hours to go to work try with little light seeing into your tank.

Mine seem to be divided into two groups- the group that lives under the wood until it's dark, and the group that lives in the plastic chain sword. The former are much lighter, mainly to due with lack of light, I'd guess.

It's broken down to two groups in the tank. The two darker kuhlis stay by themselves and live in the larger plastic rock formation. If they do come out, it's always together. The lighter kuhli and the three black kuhlis live in the log by the window. The blacks are out a lot in the afternoon and evening. The light colored kuhli comes out when they do and stays with them.

The darker kuhlis stay in the back of the tank and in the plastic rock formation. They do not come out when the black kuhlis are around. They will come out for food but only when the others have left. The black kuhlis will go into the plastic rock formation but usually come right out again. It's usually the newer black kuhli that goes into the plastic rock.

I really thought they would all stay together, but apparently not.
