Maximum Substrate Depth

Hmm that site link was a bit out on a few things. 1 main thing being the food.

I'ved been feeding my oscar from day 1 i got it with bloodworm (live and froozen), krill, crickets, Cichlid gold pellets, tubifex cubes. He's growing well and his colour has developed a bit too.

I agree aswell only 1 oscar for that tank.

I was thinking a bit on your 1 Oscar theory, and i was wondering that if i did get 1 oscar what could i place with him? i know this question sounds beginnerish but i just want to see if i get some positive feedback on my ideas.
Could i place a couple of silver dollars with the oscar?
" " a pair of firemouths?
" " a shark? (bala,columbian)
" " an archer fish?
" " a scat? (i want a red scat from aus)
Just a few ideas, could you add a few? i am not sure on which one?

Silverdollars are finicky, could be trouble
Might make a good lunch
Balas need schools and are big, Columbian sharks are brackish
archer fish are brackish
scats are brackish (red scats from australia too)
Maybe a sevrum?

ok ill think about severums. I really wanted a JD but they are illegal to keep in tanks in aus for some reason??? anyone know why?
Are there any other sugestions? i would like a texas or jaguar cichlid too i like them alot but they may be too big for the tank.

Just remminding you i have not got my oscar(s) yet and ALL of my fish will be purchased as juveniles. Does anyone know how Jaguars and Oscars go together from experience? I want something that my Oscar will be friends with like my previous one did with my acara.

Are Oscars a good match with a jaguar? I like fish that come to the top of the tank and both play in the water flow from the filter together.

so i definitely cant have 2 large fish plus the 2 plecos?
even if they grow up together?

ok i will think long and hard now and come up with a compromise :(

cheers

(still any other suggestions will be appreciated)

Being in AUS your arsenal of available fresh water fish is pretty small, Maybe you should take up diving and get into salties

Oscars getting to 14 inches aren't uncommon. Jags can get that big too.

Yes, you don't want to put two big fish in that tank.

hey that could definitely be an idea!.....i think i might start a 60L salt tank to get used to it and when i gather funds i might get a really large tank.
Until then i am going to stay with cichlids... i love 'em
I am in the last year of school and plan on going into marine biology in university so this topic is very interesting to me.

But for now i cant make the 80 gal a salt tank i love oscars and need one.

REALLY????!!!!!!
thats cool, im in adelaide so there might be different rules, maybe i heard wrong and over here they cant sell fish???? not sure though.
Maybe I will order one from Perth???? (hope its ot too illegal) B)
Thats goog how you can keep JD's ill go to my LFS soon and ask around at others too about keeping JD's.
A Jack Dempsey will be ok with an oscar right? they are smaller too and if they grow up it will be fine?

you can get some JDs for $16 from here thats the shop i visit on a regular basis and have JDs, i just wish i had a bigger tank so i can get them. all details on that site

I agree, you have nothing to worry about, though it is true that less gravel is easier to keep cleaner - the more gravel you have, the more crud will build up in it.

What an odd size tank, I worked it out to 83 gallons.
I agree .

Keeping deeper substrate clean would be the only problem I see .

So whatever " floats your boat " . ;)
