Don't think this is a silly question and I have looked but can't find the answer anywhere.

I recently bought a Boyu 20G tank, it is currently being used as a tank for growing on a few cichlids before adding them to my main tank. It has a good solid filter full of mature media taken from my main tank and has been handling 10 fish in the 20G for a few months.
the question is when I convert it to a Marine tank will the mature filter media cross over to the salt water environment or are the bacteria all going to die and have to be replaced by a new marine bunch?

Yeah, marine bacteria is different so you need to get a whole new set of filter media if you want to go fish only (which is the way i run). But most people use live rock. Its rock taken from the ocean, that has saltwater bacteria all over it already and that becomes your filter.

Ok thanks for the swift response, I was aware of the live rock thing and the plan is to have a small pile of rock and a CUC but if there is nothing useful in my filter that will cross over I can break the set up down give it a good clean and not concern myself with trying to keep the filter alive.
