Hi there! I was wondering what this unusual behavior of my mollies was:
A male and female like collided... it was a weird spasm move. I can't really explain it...but the male used its whole side of its body to butt into the female and they chased eachother around for a while. Were they mating?

And my guppies, the male likes to show off its colorful end by shimming its tail in front of the female and it tries to get under the female and follows her around. Is this mating or just for fun??

thanks!!

It can be mating, mollys and guppys can technically breed but you sort of need a labatory and stuff to do so, there have been some cases of mollys and guppys breeding successfully but the fry are either badly deformed and/or don't live longer than a couple of months. The vast majority of mollys and guppys ignore each other completely. Then there's mating for dominance, many species will mount each other in a display of dominance over the weaker individual, even males on males or females on females, this is not an act of gay love but rather agression and it can happen in many species of animals, not just fish.
Whats far more important is getting your gender ratios right  , for most livebearers you need 2-3females per male- any less than this and it leads to alot of harrassment and stress between the genders.
