I just had to euthanize my tetras. It was awful. My 46g has had ich for a LONG time now, and they were still covered in white spots. It was bad. The medication was killing them before the ich would have. My husband had to euthanize one yesterday, it's whole back fin was gone and it wasn't trying to swim anymore. The 10 others looked horrible, major fin damage and no sign of getting better. Only one of them looked like it could be saved, but the stress of being alone probably wouldn't have done it much good.

I don't know what to do now. The tank has 7 cories {one was found dead today} a clown Pleco, and 2 Platys. AND a countless number of 1/2 inch platy fry. How long should I treat the tank? The cories don't show any white spots but the fry have tiny ones. I'm just at a loss now. This is making me wish that I never bought these #40## fishtanks.

i know how you feel. i lost over 30 fish in one day so i understand the frustrations. :shout:

I started with super ich cure. Then after the full treatment cycle I did a big water change at the end and started quick cure. I had started out half dosing and with the temp at only 82 degrees because of the cories and tetras. Then with the quick cure I got aggressive and 3/4 dosed at 84 degrees. Then after about 4 days and still white spots everywhere, I started full dosing. Raising the temp any higher and the cories stop moving and eating. Right now at 84 degrees they are moving a small amount, and eating enough to live.

I had a thread in the emergency section in the beginning of this mess, but I wasn't getting responses. So I just jumped right in. I also have a hard time finding medications locally, I have coppersafe on the way by mail

when mine got itch i treated with waterlife protozin, it battered the whitespot in 3 days. i did full doses with the cories in

I used King British White Spot Control. It takes a good while and sometimes it feels like it's not making any difference at all, but even doing half doses (I have cories and have heard they are sensitive to meds) it cleared it up in about two weeks.

Sorry for your loss though, it's horrible when fish die from things you are trying to fix :(

if you can get waterlife protozin then do. i honestly couldnt praise it highly enough, by day 3 all the spots had gone.

Thanks. I have been getting pretty depressed over it. I plan to do a large water change tomorrow and to treat with something that has more OOOMPH. Tomorrow is the end of the current med cycle. My platys have no spots, other then the poor little fry, so now I am worried about how to know when it's gone.

I'll look for it, I'm in the US, do you think that's an issue with finding it?

It's so freaking awful! My 75g has sick fish as well, but they came to me this way since its some kind of parasites, I just got all of those fish. But it's never ending right now, with fish illness. You can cycle a tank perfectly, do everything right, and suddenly your fish can still drop like flies.

do we have a sticky on the best meds on here ? ones that really work !

if we dont then we should, it could spare alot of deaths.

There is a sticky OF medications, but it's a long list, which didn't help me choose.

Thanks for the thoughts. That's exactly why I wrote on here. I'm so upset, and it helps to share it.

i really hope you get it sorted,i was really gutted when my fish got it.

Esha exit or 2000 (cant remember the exact one) is pretty deadly to white spot and easy on fish. I had a heavy outbreak a few years ago and within two days esha had wiped it out and thats without adjusting the temp.

+1 on Esha Exit

Not finding that in the US  That's been the problem, I bought the quick cure, and API super ich cure, because that's what I had locally. I'm going tomorrow to look somewhere else, I have coppersafe coming in the mail if I don't find anything.

Not trying to second guess you, but are you positive it's ich? Little white individual specs that look like salt grains stuck to the fish. Not anything hanging from the fish or that moves in any way. At those temps, the ich lifecycle should be short and many of the specs should be detaching from the fish daily. Quickcure should have stopped new spots from forming right away since it's fairly effect against the free swimmers. The fish should have cleared up in just a couple of days.
