so that means that you dont have to have cartrigages and you just use carbon?
Please explanin to me what the changable media and more flexability

The media is easier to switch out and you can put different things in at the same time, like sponges, carbon, and something else. If I were you I would just put as many sponges as you could fit in there.

With filters that use cartridges you are stuck with that media for the most part, the only real thing you can do is slice the pad open, remove the carbon, and add a different media. For some folks this is peat, which can drop the pH, or fresh carbon, which removes chemicals but must be replaced weekly. Some folks add bio media, which enhances the filter's biological filtration. In any case it is a small amount compared to what you can add to an Aqua Clear, and you are stuck with that pad.

With an AC you can fill it with bio media if you like, stuff it with floss to act as a polishing filter, Or add a combination of sponges for mechanical & bio filtration, carbon, peat, peat pellets, almond leaf, floss, bio media, the combinations are near endless.

I tried sticking a cut down AC sponge into a Whisper once, it choked, hardly any flow. With the cartridge, and an extended intake it would die during water changes. Do the same thing with a comparably sized AC & it keeps running. Stronger filter.
