Hi all

I am thinking of dabbling a little in the salty side of the hobby and would like your advice please.

I have a juwel rekord 800 110 litre tropical tank which has an internal juwel compact filter which is cycled for tropical freshwater fish. I also have a fluval u3 power filter running in my main discus tank which i could also add to give extra circulation and filtration.

I am just wondering if this would be an appropriate tank to start off in marines and if so what else would I need. I also have a small 17 litre tank which could double as a sump if needed and I have an RO machine with which to make my own water.

any advice would be appreciated.

ps I am in Doncaster, UK

You don't get any help or support on this section of the forum, just criticism normally

Better to join a dedicated reef forum :good:

I don't think that's especially fair and I'm frankly surprised that this is coming from you. If that's been in the climate in the past it certainly isn't the climate now and you know it.

Back on Topic. If you are really interested in converting from tropical to marine, let me ask two questions.

1. First, have you treated the tropical tank for any disease, especially ich. If so, you'll need to do a copper test to determine if there's any copper in the aquarium. Copper is dangerous to invertebrates.

2. What are your goals?

Thanks.

You ought to know better that I didn't mean you! :good:

I'll reply later, I'm busy now doing loads of things at once

cant see a problem with the tank size. some people keep them as low as 15l i think.

If your not using a sump use the internal filter to house nitrate remover and carbon. Loose the sponges. if you are using a sump take it out completely so it goves you a bit more space.

things you will need:

Powerheads - Koralia 1 and 2 for example - i use a koralia 2 and 2 koralia 1s

Test kits - Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate. You only really need the nitrate one after the tank has cycled so if you can borrow the other two for a few weeks it will save you some pennies.

Skimmer - I have a similar size tank and its never on - as long as you maintain the water changes and dont overstock you probably get away with not having one.

Saltwater - normally around £6 for 25l or you can mix your own.

Live rock - id get between 15-20kg. the more the better

Lighting - If you want to keep corals you will need to fit marine tubes 10k or 14k colour temperature.

A Refractometer to test the salinity of the water.

Hope this helps :)
