Marine Skimmer

i was told to use filter, you mean use a spondge filter?

If you have live rock in your tank, then you do not need an external filter at all. The live rock is where the bacteria lives, which feed on ammonia and nitrites. You could get some live rock rubble and replace the sponges in your filter with the rock. Alternatively, use the external filter as a fluidized reactor. Put pouches containing granual ferric oxide/phosban/active carbon etc.

If you are new to marine fish keeping, I'd recommend you familiarize yourself with the different types of salt water tanks, like FO, FOWLR and reef, and what is required for each one.

i have the filter to remove large deres that may float about, which include leftover food.

Any food or detritus that gets sucked into your filter will just rot in there, slowly clogging it up and just add to your nitrate levels. Its far better to let your clean up crew do their job. They also get fed in the process, as hermits, shrimp and other inverts will eat missed food and fish poop. You do not need to run an external filter in a marine tank if you have live rock.
