Many People Mispronounce Betta

Beta is the 2nd letter in the Greek alphabet, betta is the fish. They are spelled differently and are pronounced differently. I would wager I am right, and if I am that would make me a better bettor. Hmmm.

It's latin, so there is no fixed pronunciation for it other than what your native language is. Which means ALL English speakers should be pronouncing it with a short "e" sound as the rule in English is that a vowel followed by a double consonant takes the short pronunciation.
So that means it does NOT sound like "beta" (the greek letter), or "beeta" or anything else with a long "e" or other vowel sound. Should be the same "e" that you use in letter, wetter, and etcetera.

One of my pet peaves. These fish are not the first generation being tried out by the public like a beta of software. The double t in the species name exists for a reason. The two ts means that the vowel that precedes it is a short vowel not a long vowel. Betta just like better but without the r sound. Until we had beta software the wrong pronunciation was seldom seen. These days it is far too common.
