Hard to tell from pictures, if you can get a shot of an erect dorsal fin we should be able to say (if the fish is old enough). The way to tell is that females have a black splodge in the middle of the dorsal fin (like female texas) and males lack this marking.

Thanks for the replies...as of right now the fish doesnt have that mark...i read that males have alot more blue on their faces and sides as youths and this one seems to be pretty blue

Also it seems to be VERY skitish...he may be swimming around while im on my computer (which is right next to the tank) and ill look over and he'll go hide...just from me looking at him...and this has happened atleast 10-12 times since i've had him/her (4 days now) does anyone know if this is typical or is it still adjusting?

Salvini's can be quite shy, yours is still probably settling in as well. I'd give it more time and hopefully they will get used to your presence. A tip is to put a little bit of food in the tank whenever you walk into the room, that way they will assosiate you with being fed so when they see you they will hopefully rush to the glass thinking there's a meal coming .

Thanks for the replies...maybe ill wait for him/her to get a bit bigger then maybe we'll know for sure lol...i can only get it too eat blood worms but he/she knows it comes when im right in front of the tank lol...i can see him out and about now (my moon lights are still on (regular lights on at 10 am) and i just threw some pellets in for him...i keep calling it a him...oh well...thanks again!

well the salvini has gotten a lot braver, it stares me down when i come up to the glass now lol...I got a pic with some more flare to it..

i want to know what sex it is lol...

well the convicts and salvini have established their territory and its fairly centered, the cons seem to have a couple inches more lol...

From the picture I can't see a 'dorsal splodge' I was refering to earlier, so I'm going male.
