I got a gorgeous  (handsome?) male platy today, along with a calico female and a sunset burst female.
This may be too early to mention, but he doesn't seem to be paying much attention to the females. He seems like he kind of half-courts the calico, but he nips aggressively at the sunset burst female.
Also, I'm not entirely sure what variety he is. I will try and post some pics tomorrow or the next day, because my camera is dead at the moment...
I'm kind of guessing that he was just getting settled into the tank today, I just want to know if anyone thinks if he will eventually show any interest later on.
Thanks!

I would wait a few days before worrying.  Its still a very new environment.

Yeah, that's what I figured... Thanks :)
I was just curious because  had this happen once before, and the fish never bred. :/

maybe the females are already hosting eggs. Platty fish can be pregnant with the same eggs for a long time. He will know if the eggs have already been fertilized or not. A platty fish can lay eggs and then lay eggs again weeks later from the same batch of fertilized eggs

MEANING maybe the females are already hosting fertilized eggs

Platys are livebearers, they don't lay eggs!  But yes the females might already be pregnant and they might all still be settling in anyway.

Like neutron said, they host the eggs until the hatch inside the mother, then she 'gives birth' to them. Pretty spiffing set up :) If they have already bred they might have a gravid spot, which is a black spot near the anal fin. I'd just wait till the fish have had a day or two to settle and take it from there!

Thanks you guys!

It's only been 2 days and he's slowly showing more interest in the calico... the sunset burst he nips at one time, sending her swimming away - and he doesn't follow. The Calico female doesn't appear to be pregnant at all (she's light colored, and it's easy to see her insides), although the Sunset has a tiny black dot where her gravid spot should be... perhaps it is the beginning of one...
Also, this has to do with the same male platy... He rubs against plants (flashing). I know flashing can be a sign of ich, but there are no spots, and the two females are doing fine. Is he just a bit itchy? Not ichy?

That was kind of off topic, but it has to do with the platy so I figured I'd mention it..
Thanks again! :)
