i brought this dwarf gourami today from a pet shop and explained that i wanted a female one as i had two males before but one male died (i think the other one bullied it but the shop i brought it from didnt tell me that its not a good idea to buy two males). but i have been studying it today and to me it looks like a male. i was just wondering what anyone else thinks? if it is then i think i will have to take it back as i dont want my male to bully it

Male, more pictures would help but in that picture the length of the body says it's a male.  Females have a shorter but taller profile and they're much less colorful.  He looks like a nice one too, good luck with him.

Here's a few pictures of my females for reference:

Yer I think it definitely looks like a male, his orange stripes are to colourful and he just looks like a mini version of my other male.....I think I will have to take him back and see if I can swap him for a female. Do dwarf gouramis get along with any other type of gourami or will they just get along with dwarfs?

Dwarf Gourami's are temperamental. Sometimes they get one with everything, sometimes they hate everything. It's trial and error. I'd recommend that for the sake pf the male you have already, don't get another one.
