It's always sad to see a fish go, especially this way. Strange though... What a couple of nasty females

I have read before that a short curcuiting heater can make fish behave out of character, might pay to just double check that everything in the tank is in fine working order.

Where did you read that? If a heater short circuits it will blow the fuse or trip the mcb so it wont work at all, in which case the tank will be cold so the fish will be lathargic, not hyper.
