 Has anything been proven regarding the male/female ratio of offspring in a spawn? From the looks of things I have about 75% males which has started me wondering.

Does anybody know what decides it for bettas? Is it genetic like humans, or temperature based like alligators? Or maybe the pH has something to do with it.

I know a lot of breeders would manipulate their spawns if they thought they could get more males out of it.

Fish don't have sex chromosomes like birds and mammals do, but betta spawns tend to lean toward a 50/50 ratio, so I'd say it's partially genetic, anyway.
I've heard that pH has a lot to do with it... supposedly you get more males with a lower pH. Nash, what is your pH reading?

Hmmm... 6.8 is what my pH is at.
Interestingly, there's a Thai breeder who has supposedly created a magic juice that will get you 95% males per spawn. I may order some and try it on my next spawn if noone else does before then, not because I want a lot of males, but just because I'm curious to see if it works. If it does, then that tells you it definitely has a lot to do with water conditions rather than something like temperature. Perhaps hardness plays a factor?

Edit: Haha, "plays a factor." I guess I couldn't decide between "plays a role" and "is a factor"

my last spawn i had all females no males the one b4 that was all female but 4 males think i mite try sum of diss stuff too lol
