I'm just curious if anyone successfully has a male betta in a large community tank? I kept fish several years ago and I remember having a betta as just another fish in the tank.

What I don't remember is how it did with the other fish. I have mine in his own little tank and have no plans to move him but I am curious.

You know it's sad that you can't have a large tank full of male bettas. These are some serious beautiful fish.

Hummm....a school of bettas. That would really be something to see! ;)

I think that bettas might be kept in a community tank depending on the other fish. Many many years ago I tried keeping one in a tank that had angels in it. Needless to say that did not work out well. :/ So it's just lately I've tried another betta, but now I'm keeping him with corys and they get along fine.

I've been wondering if I could put one in my community tank now that I'm moving it back to a 55 gal and there will be plenty of room, so I'll be following this thread with great interest.

oh if only!!!! (drool over the beautiful bettas..........)
okay, back to the question. i don't personally, becasue my mollies are the lyretail variety and i just wouldn't want to chance the betta mistakening anyone (and outlaw, my dominant male molly, would not back down from the betta,it would be a mess...). but it would really depend on the other fish and on the betta. i know my little red guy would be miserable in a big tank, he's actually happiest in the little dual betta hex (which is what, not even 1/2 gal??) than in his current 1 gal (may be moving him soon and replacing him with a new betta). whereas my big blue guy would probably just love all the space to flare and swim about. i know lizard has one in her 10 gal and i know a couple of others do too (hers come to mind as she posted some pics earlier today....).

In my expirience male bettas get along fine in community tanks. though it sometimes depends on persinalaty.

I've kept a couple of male bettas (one at a time, of course) in a community tank (mostly in a 16 gal, but in a 34 gal as well) without trouble. They usually kept to the densely planted areas and didn't bother other fish. If I remember correctly, the other fish were a few platies, small tetras and cories. I've also kept a few females in a community tank, but they were more aggressive towards other fish than the males, surprisingly enough.

If you do want to keep a betta in a community tank, you have to choose the company carefully and give them a well-planted bit they can claim as their territory.

You can have bettas with a nice range of community fish, however you really need to pick the tank mates. For example guppies with bettas = catastrophe. Angels with bettas = catastrophe.

Either way good luck ;)

Yes of course its possible to keep siamese fighters in a community tank but make sure the fish you keep him with arent aggressive such as tiger barbs, red tail black shark etc but go with placid fish such as gourami's and mollies for eg.

Yep, I do. Well, did...he's was taken out yesterday 'cause of some fuzzy spots on his fin and he's very, very unhappy and mad that I would *dare* remove him from the big tank. When he's health, Spiderman is kept in the 10 gallon tank that has Platys, Corys, and a little Pleco. I've had no problems with him being aggressive. He spends most of his time swimming back and forth across the front of the tank. Pics of him in the tank are over in the Member's Aquarium Pics forum under a title like "Random Pics of my Fishies".

i have had betta's(a male and female) in a small (10 gallon) commutity tank. it was very nice but temperments in both male and female bettas very. my female that i had was more aggressive than the male. so if the fish in you tank arent to big, small, or agresive id recomend 1-4 bettas(only one male though). :fun:
