There are many videos and websites out there that describe how to create your own co2 system. Some of them are unsafe, ineffective, but some are also great ideas. This is just how I do my DIY Co2 system and it works great for me so I thought I would share.

If you are making your own it will all depend on the tank size you plan to put this in.

This set-up is for a 10 Gallon tank. (If you have a different sized tank please contact me and I can tell you what you need to adjust for your tank)

First off why the heck do you want a Co2 system??!!?!?

Well the main reason is for plant growth. Plants need Co2 to grow so if you water densest have much <---- That might be a problem!

10 gallon Co2 System

Drill or something to poke a small hole (Drill is better)

What you will need:
2 litter bottle ($2)
16 oz bottle ($1.50)
Co2 diffuser (optional but recommended) ($4.50 on ebay)
Air line tubing ($2 on ebay)
Check valve (Optional but recommended)($1.50 on ebay)

Mixture: (You will need this as well)

Water (nothing special about it) (free)
Sugar (Hopefully you have some around the house)
Live Yeast (As long as it says bread making yeast on the package your fine) ($2.50)
__________________________________________________________________________

1.) You will need to drill a small hole into the cap of both bottles
Note: The hole size needs to be smaller than the airline tubing (Helps create air-tight seal)

2.) The Smaller Bottle will need two holes vs. the larger bottle which only needs one

3.)Cut your airline tubing in half (measure about 1 inch of tubing and cut it so that half the tubingis still there and half of it gets cut off)
Note: This makes it a whole lot easier to get that tubing into the hole. If your tubing fits into the hole without any effort on your part your hole is to big!

4.)You want your larger bottle to have the tubing sticking down about 2-3 inches and it will run into the smaller bottle all the way to the bottom.

5.) Next your want another piece of tubing to go into the smaller bottle about 2-3 inches and then run it into your tank (connecting it to your Co2 diffuser if you are using one)

6.) Now you want to fill your larger bottle 1/2 to 3/4 full of luke warm water, do the same for your smaller bottle

7.)You will want to add 2 cups of sugar into your larger bottle

8.)You now want to add one tablespoon of yeast into the larger bottle
Note: now shake the larger bottle so the water turns cloudy

9.)Tighten the caps on both bottles to ensure a tight fit

10.)Your system is now complete and you should start seeing results in 15 -30mins ( as long as you used luke warm water)

Expect this mixture to last 1-2 months and then simple empty it out and repeat the steps

Explaining what you did and why you did it!

The Mixture; Yeast feeds on the sugar which then produces the Co2.

Why the smaller bottle?
Yeast will produce alcohol which is toxic to your fish so running your Co2 into this smaller bottle and allowing it to bubble up form there removes any alcohol that may have been produced.

Why do you need a Co2 diffuser?

They are designed to make the Co2 come out in smaller bubbles which have increased surface area, which makes your Co2 more effective

why do you need the Check Valve?

Your tank may siphon out into your Co2 system which could make your floor really wet and kill your fish :( <--- not good.

If you make one please comment on this I would love to hear about how yours worked!

Might get more positive feedback if you had pictures.

There are loads of videos on Youtube which are easier to follow and understand than a wall of text.

i just made one.... a check valve should be a must! the bottle is hard but im getting no bubbles... how long does it take to bubble?

The reaction usually starts within 24 hours. An airstone is fine to use, but having the airline hooked up to an internal filter with venturi is far more effective. :good:

i woke up this morning and i saw bubbles! thanks!!! i will be adding an internal filter in a couple weeks i will look into hooking it up to it :)
