I want to build my own stand. I have an old leaf to a kitchen table I want to use for the top of the stand. It is bigger then my tank but it is water proof and I use the extra area for my 2 gallon aquarium. I was wondering if the old legs from the table could be used or if I should use 4x4 on the corners and 2x4 for support. If I use the old legs I will still make a rectangle using 2X4 on the top the to connect the legs to them then put the leaf to table on them. If I should use the 4x4 corner post then could I add a shelf for my gecko's tank.

It depends how sturdy the legs are. I use treated 2x4's to make stands. Either way you should have no trouble making a 2nd shelf for the other tank. Just make sure it is all level & square, and that the perimeter of the tank is supported.

Brace the heck out of it, every 10 gallons weights 80 LB's so thats like haveing a medium sized man sitting on the table for every 20 gallons

. i would just use 2 by 4s. It is actually very cheap so its not like you would be saving a ton of money by using the old legs.. I made mine for 40 bucks.
