Hey,

Ive got a breeding pair of bristle noses, they first spawned when i transferred them into a new tank but without realizing they had i disturbed them and was awkward trying to replace the wood because they where both on it and wouldnt move and i dunno what happened to the eggs/fry in the end, then they spawned again close to the filter i did see some fry but im guessing the filter got them, wasnt too bothered about breeding them at the time. But now ive got a 15 gal i wanna breed guppies and my bn's in just wondering the best way to get them to spawn again? been trying to condition them with veg, but will a big water change or temp change get them going?

cheers

fatten the female up for a couple of weeks with good quality food. then add protein rich food towards the end. by this time your male should have a suitable cave and be territorial about it. start changing 20% of the water daily with cold water to simulate the rainy seasons they have in the wild. after a few days the male should be getting interest off the female and trapping her in the cave. the spawning process can take upto 48 hours and normally happens either at night or dawn. then happy days and your male is fanning like a mofo on some lovely orange eggs. from my experience the female is less important than the male. the males the instigator in the spawning.

in a 15 gal make sure you keep on top of the water changes when they do spawn as 50+ little BN's really add to the waste production ;-)

Fanning like a mofo!! haha!!!!! cant disagree with that!!!

fanning like a mofo ha, remember seeing that. Well i might have a change of plan looks like my new snakeskin discus has paired with my leopard and have been cleaning a broad leaf and dancing, so if they spawn in the community the 15 gal will become their little love nest, again i kno about reg water changes cos of the discus been doing that anyway, so the bn's will go back into main tank if the discus spawn. they spawned last time and i didnt do anything special, the male should keep the fry safe in the community nothing in there should have a go at them. But will wait and see if the discus spawn in the community will still try and get the bn's to spawn before and the tank will be over filtered. :good:
