I recently acquired some ghost shrimp and it was said that during molting, they need to seek shelter against possible predators. I currently have a 10 gallon tank with 2 ghost shrimp, 2 black skirt tetras, 4 neon tetras, and 1 dwarf platy. If a shelter is absolutly nescessary, then I was wondering about making a makeshift one out of the bottom of a regular plastic bottle. Would the plastic have any significant damage to the water or my fish?

A clay pot might be a better idea.. a plastic bottle probably would work too though. Just make sure there aren't any sharp edges on it.

The bottle will work, for sure. Assuming you can get it to the bottom of the tank. It won't hurt your water.

IMO, it's a better idea than the pot, just because it is going to be safer in there, assuming it'll go in there. Mine wouldn't go anywhere near anything dlear, since they could still see stuff.

I'm in the process of setting up another tank, for ghosties and guppies. The bottom will be full PVC pipes, cut into pieces and parts. Neither type needs the substrate and it makes clean up easier. :) Of course...I am going to be breeding them as feeders for my Oscar. LOL
