Well I should be ordering some African Dwarf Frogs as the first inhabitants of my tank on Tuesday. The thing is I am ordering them online and they don't sex them. So I won't know whether I'm getting females, males or a mix of the two.

I was going to get 4, so hopefully I would get 2 females and 2 males. But what if I got 3 males and 1 female? Would they stress her out by wanting to mate and chasing her all the time, or would they fight over her at all?

So what should the male to female ratio ideally be?

And would it be best if I got 5, so that there is a bigger chance of having at least 2 females? Or would it be better to just get 2 frogs, so they would either be 1 male and 1 female or a single sex group.

Hope I havent confused you with all the numbers... hope you can advise me on this.

hey! do not stress yourself out about gender - males do not get aggressive over females like most species of fish do.
and once you get them , it is quite easy to sex them - - them males have a gland under their front armpit which looks similar to a pimple. the females don't have any glands (easy huh?)

and when it comes to mating - they are very clumsy! amplexing (when the male grasps the female around the waist) is quite comical when they are young! males will grab other males, females will grab females, and you can get a "chain" going where one frog A is being grabbed by frog B, while frog C is trying to grab onto frog B too! and if the male grabs onto an uninterested female, the female will actually sit there "tapping" her find foot (like, "yea ok bud...GET OFF!" - or as we like to say "not now hunny...I have a headache") to which the male will most likely respond to by kicking the female in the head with his hind feet - before getting bored and letting go.

also, I always like having more males because the males "call out", or make a warbling, chirping noise under the water when the want to mate - i find the noise to be quite fascinating - it happens quite often at night and after water changes

so don't stress yourself out - and if they do manage to mate, unless you find and separate the eggs they will end up getting eaten.

let me know if i can help you with any other questions! or you can always PM me again!
