Over the last few weeks my tank has been gradually getting warmer and it is now reading 30 oC. I am a little worried about this as I dont want to cook my fish.

The heater is set at 20 oC at the moment so isn't the problem as I have also had it unplugged for a few days. I have just done a 25% water change and did the water a couple of degrees lower (not too much lower as to stress the fish).

What can I do to lower the overall tank temp without harming the fish ?. At the moment I have got the lid off and the light off and the room ceiling fan is on full blast !!!

how powerful is the heater watt wise???
maybe you termetor is broke?
what lights are you running?

oh i see a 300 watt heater...
youve had no heating for a few days and its 30c

The light unit is very much like the Juwel ones where it sits in the top of the tank so the ballasts are really close to the water, as are the two tubes. I am looking into getting one of the Arcadia overtank luminaires so hopefully this will help matters. Its a bit worrying Nelly !!!. Have just tried my spare thermometer and it reads the same :(

and this is with no heater?
are the fish ok?
dont do drastic water temp changes it has to be gradule :good:
i have a jewel with the two lights over top and heatings set at 25c and it is 25c
hope someone can help you out as i have to go out now...see if i can look in later n good luck

you could try a fan on the tank surface that will lower the temp :)

I used to put a ice cube in the filter. Just one at a time and watch the temp. The filter will distribute the water quickly and as long as the fish don't hang out by the filter output it should be a gradual change.
I didn't see what size tank you have but if it's 10g or more once you get it cool it will take several hours before it warms up again. Don T.

Put ice cubes in a SEALED plastic bag so no chlorine contamination and place them where the fish can't get them, in the filter housing or in a box with holes in it.

To sustain 30C you must be supplying heat so it must come from either the lights (most likely) or the motor for the pump. (Or your house is above 30C, you live in the Sahara don't you?)
