Low Energy Lightbulbs

A 6500K CF bulb that you buy for your home is the same as the one you buy for your tank, only you arent paying for the word aquarium, and you can't get them in marine spectrums :(

However since an 18" 96 watt quad tube with balast only costs 75 dollars I'm not that upset.

If anyone in the US is looking for some bulbs that are 6500K I have found some at Wal-Mart:

Right now I am running two of these for my 37gal and they've been working great!

How much were the walmart bulbs? Never knew walmart would carry these, although they do tend to have stuff which is cheap.

For the record, I have been to B&Q, Focus, Wickes, Homebase, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's aswel as several smaller shops and none of them have low energy bulbs in daylight specrtum, think I'll have to order them online, though I will try Wilkos first.

Oh i forgot to mention that i went to MANY stores around here in Poznan looking for them bulbs as well, and coundnt find them...maybe it was becos i cant speak Polish...otherwise they mite've been able to order some in for me...at least from Germany...

anyways, that searching period went on for a long time, until i went back home to australia and bought some there instead...then brought them back to Poland.

Well I bought the fittings, wire, plug, inline switch etc today from Wickes (about £8 worth) and ordered 2 * 25 watt 6500K bulbs from ebulbs (£16.73 in p+p), so whole thing will stand me at about £25 for 50watts, if I want more or less wattage I can order new bulbs and use the 25w ones in my house, so nothing wasted there then :D

My hood will not need much in the way of modification, but will post pics when the bulbs arrive and I get it done.

Yeah, but then I'd need 3 of them (18") to get to 45 watts and I'd need the ballasts too, which I doubt I could get 3 (or a double and single) for under a tenner ;)

Then I'd need a way to fix 3 tubes in a 2 foot hood and find space for at least 2 ballasts, maybe 3, or make a new hood which is more time and expense and I'd then have at least another plug to find a socket for too.

My way still works out cheaper, with more wattage and less work :p

Well I've finally done it B)

2 * 25 watt 6500K low energy bulbs, looks great  it was cheap and easy.
