Hi all,

Around a month ago, I added five Bronze Corys to my 4ft tank (my first Corys); around two weeks later I added five Peppered Corys. I got home last night to find 65-70 clear eggs on the front glass. I expected something eventually, but not this soon. At the moment, I don't have a spare tank and I can't find the breeding trap I know I've got somewhere; I can't get out for a breeding trap (net type) until Tuesday, so what can I do (if anything) in the meantime. I need to know a few things in addition;

1 how long until they hatch
2 how many can I expect to survive
3 what's the best way to get the eggs off the glass without damaging them
4 what kind of food would I need at first

For the third point, I've thought about using the 'mini baster' I use for dropping thawed frozen food into the tank. I was used to this 'playing dad' lark when I kept Livebearers, but this has taken me by surprise. Any thoughts and suggestions very welcome.

Hi mate you will need a container and a air stone if you dont have a trap or net.

I now remove the eggs with my fingers i very gentally roll them onto my finger tips then stick to the walls of my floating trap.

myn hatch in two days normally but i would say it can range between 2-4 days depending on hatching.

if its the first attempt i wouldnt expect them all to be fertilised so dont expect big numbers from the first batch it took myn a couple of attempts before they got around a 80% fetilisation rate on large batchs of eggs. You will know if they are fetilised by the colour after a day or two they will turn a creamy colour as appost to white.

I use liquifry no1 for the first week then move onto crush flakes and whatever else they will take obviously in small doses, do not feed for the first couple of days until you see the yoke sacks obsorbed.

Make sure the container the eggs are in have plenty of aeration.

Just to add to stifflers post, if you do decide to use a tub, make sure to change 50% of the water 2-3 times a day

Thanks to both of you. Just my luck; if it had happened on my days off I could have got a trap. Fish are so inconsiderate, aren't they?. Thanks again.

Floating a small tub on the water will be fine :) until you can get a trap, persoanlly though i would get a fine breeding net, this is what i use and you dont have to keep doing water changes on them and there is a lot more room :)

Yes, I'm definitely going to get the net type. Would a tub be ok (for a couple of days) without a water flow through it, though?. I do a twelve hour shift, so it would be at least that long between changing the water in it.

just make sure there is a air stone in it m8 for aeriation.

Oh dear; no sign of the eggs when I got home after my last post. Strange, none of the other fish seemed to pay the eggs any attention. Any chance they've hatched during the day and are lurking somewhere I can't see them?. I'll still buy a net breeder, though; I dare say there'll be more eggs soon.

Back again,
Woke up Thursday afternoon to my second lot of Cory eggs (in three or four places around the tank, unlike the first lot). Got them in a net breeder with a decent flow through it, but not enough to blow the eggs around. Before I left for work tonight, I could just see the eyes in some of the eggs so already got further than the first lot. I've bought some Liquifry (thought I'd never need any more of that when I stopped keeping Livebearers!) and in the leaflet it says that you can use it to culture Brine Shrimp but, rather helpfully, doesn't say how. Could anyone enlighten me, please?. (assuming it's worth it).
