Lost another

Sorry to hear your loss on such BEAUTIFUL bettas. :byebye: And sorry to say, it does sound like TB. :-(

Hi Sorrell :)

TB, with all its horrible implications, is fortunately rare, so please don't resign yourself to that conclusion while there is still any hope that it could be something else.

Bacterial infections can be pretty awful themselves, and are common among bettas. Could it be possible that you have a mutated strain of some ordinary bacteria in your tanks? This can happen fairly easily, from what I have heard. By using any medication, (especially antibiotics) and not treating long enough to completely cure the fish, there is a risk that when the disease comes back it will be in a form that is resistant to that medicine. I know I've seen this happen with my own.

Remember too, that this might or might not have happened in the course of any treatment you gave them. When we buy new fish we never know what nasties they might be bringing with them. And it's possible too that a fish might be ill for a time before any symptoms become evident. In this way it would be fairly easy to cross contaminate a number of tanks before realizing that there is a problem.

Another thing too, is that unless a fish has become stressed in some way, the bacteria in question could remain in the water for a long time before it shows itself.

Does any of this seem possible in your case?

Sure it seems possible, but I really think that at least one of them would have responded to medication. When I listed all those meds I didn't mean that they were all used on one fish. Because it's been happening so much, I have tried different things on different fish.

hey sorrel, im sorry about ur fish, it really does sound like tb. it can pass throgh from water to water so it would be good to steralize all ur equiptment and just treat all of the fish to keep them from getting worse -_-

yes cation, I understand the difference from the two. What do you suppose is happening inside of the bettas? The antibiotic will help heal the damage. The other part of my post said I knew of a treatment.

I would suppose a secondary infection, that's why I mentioned it. You say parasites, then immediately mention antibiotics. I don't know how I could have possibly not understood what you were so clearly implying.

Hi Sorrell :)

These are the symptoms of fish TB that macquatic posted on another forum. I am going to put them here so you can compare them and any other members who do not understand what it is about can see.

This sounds like fish tuberculosis (Tuberculosis Piscium).
Symptoms :
Fish lose their appetite, grow thin, have hollow stomachs and bent or arched spines. The colours pale, the skin becomes inflammed, fins can be affected with small growths on them and internal organs may cease to function. Fish are lethargic and swim eratically. Other symptoms include popeye, loss of eyes, gill deformaties, defective scales and the changes of shape in the spinal column.
Positive diagnosis can only be done under a microscope with a smear slide of an internal organ.
TB is the most dangerous of all aquatic diseases, highly infectious and easily transferred.
Treatment can only be done with a few antibiotics such as Tetracycline although it is often best to put the fish out of its misery.
Be careful when disposing of infected fish as the disease can be transferred to humans. Mac.

The context of his post had to do with a batch of corys that came into Singapore and a number of the members bought. The first symptoms that the members reported were the bent spines.

Does this sound like your problem?

Steph, I am so sorry about Thor and the others that you have lost. :-( I really hope for all your fishes sake (and for yours) that it isn't TB. Me and my fishies are thinking of you and wishing you all the best.

I would reccomend treating all of them ;) My fish had the highly contagious camalanus nematodes, and I treated everyone, and all is well. Better safe than sorry :) Really stinks that you lost so many fish :/ I lost 3 bettas in august/september, along with other fish, so I know how you feel

Thanks for the nice thoughts everyone  Yes Inch, unfortunately that does sound right. Been a few days and everyone is still acting normal, so I'm holding out on medicating, but I appreciate all the input and I'll keep you guys posted
