please can anyone have any Idea's on this over the last 3 day's I have found 4 or 5 fish or kholi loach dead in the morning

I think it could be the bamboo shrimps as they was always at the top of some bog wood in the flow of the filter but in the last week took to the gravel are they killing the fish in the night if not what could it be please any help welcome have lost dwarf gourmi's, kholi loach, baby guppies and neon's

I have tested the water and its spot on so can only think its them

in the tank I have left
2 dwarf gourmi's
3 neon's
3 kholi loach
5 glow tetra's
5 swordtails
3 platies + some babies
3 Amano shrimp's

its a 200ltr tank

What are you testing with, test strips or liquid test kits?

Did you "fishless cycle" (dosing with ammonia for approx. 30-60 days) tank before adding the fish?

Hi. bamboo shrimp are filter feeders which is why you see they near the top in the flow as they are filtering the water for their dood supply. if a fish dies then im not sure if the bamboo shrimp will pick at it like others and fish would, if it could then i guess it would...

have you got your water test results at all as this may help us figure out whats wrong.

also have you added anything new to the tank recently?

we have had the tank for years, I test with the liquid plus had it tested at the LPS and they said it was fine
the only thing added in the last few weeks is the kholi loach but half of them have died and the amano shrimps

I know the bamboo shrimps are filter feeders so I arrange the tank so they can sit in the flow of water but al of a sudden they have gone to the bottom

my hubby saw a bamboo shrimp with a guppie this morning so I told him it would have been already

how long have you had the bamboo shrimp for? for them to move from the flow suggests they arent getting enough food there. keep an eye on them as they may starve....

were the loaches quarentined before you added them at all? if not they may not be well, are there any signs of illness/disease on the dead ones? did you acclimatise them for long enough? ive never kept these loaches so know nothing about their sensitivity im affraid.

we have had they about 6 months, yes i acclimatised the loaches just the same as I do with all fish, they had no sign of illness on them same as everything else thats died

at the centre yesterday they said I had a nitire spike I had checked the water the day before and it was fine but when they did it with a industrial tester it showed high nitrate but I redid it when came home it showed some but not like the one they used

I have done a 75% water change to see what happens they did try to sell me some tonic for fin rot white spot etc but I know its not that had them before so know what to look for so tried doing a water change and see what happens
when doing the change found that the filter/pump wasn't working properly so put my spare in with the same pads out the old one, that could be why the bamboo shrimps was going to the bottom so will keep a check to see if they go back up lights are still out at the mo so can't see
fingers crossed this has worked

plus no more dead fish

Have you cleaned the older filter/pump that you have just replaced with your spare, in say the last three months? "Gunk" can build up on the impeller and inside the cavity where the impeller sits, a good clean with removed tank water and a few cotton bud sticks can work wonders to revive flow. ;)

Bamboo shrimp are filter feeders that feed on small particles in the water, they definitely won't be feeding on fish, whether that's ones that are already dead or killing them themselves. They're not predators.

If they're around the bottom it means that there's not enough particles in the water for them to feed on, so they may be sifting through the sand to see what they can find.

I gave the spare a good clean when it was taken out after use but re-cleaned as its not been used a while so now using it with the old sponges out of the broken one that has been cleaned in the old water
I regular clean the filter in the tank water that's been taken out for fresh water, when doing this i clean the fan and all round the pump as well
the one I was using is broken it was very old
