Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get the latest drivers for my dvd burner?

I have a BENQ DVD DD DW1640 model dual layer dvd bruner that is causing problems. When I try to burn a dual layer disc my standard dvd player is only capable of reading the first half of the disc. Anything on the second half/ layer is not read.
The drivers are from Microsoft in 2001 and I don't particularly want to do an auto update because it always messes up my other software. Therefore I was wondering if anyone knows where i can get the latest drivers for this model of burner.

I have been to the Benq website and they don't have squat.

To update the driver only;

right click my computer
select manage
select device settings (or words to that effect, I'm not at a Windows PC atm to look it up...)
select the drives drop-down to get the list of drives
right click the drive
select update driver
RDBS (read the bl??dy screen) from there on it ;)

Have discs burnt in this drive worked previously? Have you tried the discs that don't work in any other DVD players? I don't think the drivers will be the problem, they just translate what the drive reads and wants to do to what windows can understand and vice versa. If you still think it's the drive at fault you could try updating the firmware which is what actually makes the drive work, but this isn't for the feint hearted as any error or problem with the firmware upload can brick the drive.

for rabbut

I have tried doing the update drivers but it doesn't find anything newer. Stupid software.

For MHunt
I used to use Mitsubishi dual layer disc and they worked fine. But i tried using some Verbatim because the mitsubushis weren't available, and it its the Verbatim that don't work properly.

I have tried playing the discs on several dvd players and they have the same problem. But they work when I play them on the computer.

I have contacted Verbatim and they said they would send me a list of places to update my drivers but they haven't come back to me yet, and I'm not sure they will because they said that last week.

I think there's your answer, the mitsubishi's may have better tolerances which mean they'll work properly in commercial players, wheras the verbatim aren't so generous. Verbatim are normally ok, but they may just not work as well in your drive. See if you can get another brand and try that.

Edit - Found this.

link to the BenQ site with the firmware update for your drive. Like I say be careful, do this wrong and you will have a brick where your DVD writer used to be.

Pm Me with your Email address
as I have a file on my home PC that has most updated drivers in it I can seperate the DVD drivers and PM them to you or if its not too big I can send you the whole file

Sorry Colin
all drivers are for onboard stuff
sorry mate cant help, you should be able to find them somewhere on the web without having to do a full update though

HI Colin,
My guess is that it is not the disk.
Verbatim are some of the best disks on the market. They use a proper ink that does not degrade like most of the other brands.
Getting the drivers is as simple as going to the support forum on the manufacturers site and you will also find informtion there from other people to see if they have had the same problem and if that is the case it could be worth your while to roll back to an earlier driver that they could also supply. There is a site that will also help you out on any info that you should require and i would highy suggest taking a look at it. Afterdawn. Just type it into google. The members there are very helpful with anything that you will need.
Sorry i could not be of more help.

just an update on the problem. Turns out my dvd players don't read DVD-R disks, but they do read DVD+R disks. The problem disks were -R. I tracked down some +R dual layer disks and they work fine.
Thanks for your help everyone :)
