My first Betta just passed away in february, (he was about 2 1/2 years old and I miss him soo much!), and I'm looking to get another one. I'd like a male veil tail, no particular color. I have been looking in my local petstore but all the ones I've seen so far look sickly. Can anyone tell me what to look for for a healthy boy? Also I'd like him to be relatively young, how young can you get them; all the ones I've seen are kind of big already. If they're big arent they at least a year old already??

I never heard of this site thanks. but Im not sure about shipping him across country? will he be alright? has anyone done this before?

Normally bettas at petstores are around 1 yr. old.

Look for bettas who are active, swimming around, not laying at the bottom and flairing at the others or atleast showing interest in them.

Watch out for bettas with bloated looking bellies, bettas that look like they are a pine cone, or bettas with any obvious fungus or ich on them. But, if you do see a betta with something like fin or tail rot that isn't too seriouse, buy him, some Maracyn 2 or bettamax and treat him and he should get better.

I've actually seen some bettas that are half white or light in color. Are there whitish bettas or are they just ill with ich or something? My friends bettas all turned white just before they died(she never took care of them properly!)

Just last night at walmart I saw two all white bettas. I was tempted to take one!

Bettas colors will 'drain' when they are sick. That will also sometimes happen when you are taking them home and put them in a new tank. When they settle down their colors should return!
