Alright, well reading through the posts in the forum, I've noticed that there are alot of negative things about the stores in all areas and how cruely they treat theyre bettas and other fish. I take notice too, cause it's really impossible to ignore, no matter what the animal. Today a store made me smile. :)

I went to Petland Discounts in the New York area to help pickout new turtle stuff for my boyfriends nephew. I also went to get medicine for my poor fishie. I quickly took notice to the betta section, and boy was it pretty.

Each betta, in a somewhat small but crystal clear bowl were sitting on a shelf. There was about 20, evenly spaced, each bowl containing gravel and very very healthy betta's. I didn't see any females, but I saw a rainbow of types and colors, from yellow, to green, to white ones and even a tiny purple boy. Each was flaring at me as I looked, fin's perfect and water amazingly clear. Then a worker came over and started to bring them in the back. One at a time. Being nosy I asked what she was doing, and she said cleaning the bowls. I asked how often they do this. She responds every other day.

No wonder why they were so happy! And it makes me happy!

any good stories with local pet stores?

My LFS is wonderful with her babies. She's usually got about 20 assorted males (never seen a femme though), from CT to DT, VT and even a plakat on occasion. She runs the store alone, but tries to clean the containers every other day. They are not in cups or bowls, but in little 1/2 gal plastic containers that have lids! =3 You know, the kind that have handles and a little clear plastic...thing to lift up to feed them. They all have gravel and their own little plant and most have a pair of ghost shrimp...if they haven't been munched.

Her tanks are always crystal clear and she had the most amazing range of fish, I saw an albino arrowana once! I adore her place, even if it is a bit expensive. She takes such wonderful care of her fish, you can tell she cares.

The betta's at petland were all 4.99, not bad for a healthy pretty fish. They were all so active! :D

It makes me feel good to know that there are places out there that care.

I just founf her a few weeks ago and bought a lovely little red and white boy. Not sure what to call his coloration, but if you want I'll put a pic up of him. His tail got mangled in shipping to her place but it's regrown amazingly, though I'll admit it was nowhere near as bad as BattaMomma's Lucky. =3

we have this store in roanoke, va called Natures Emporium. when i went in all the animals, Dogs, fish, snakes, birds, everything was healthy and you could see that people really cared for them. The bettas there were also in small class bowls and they were really clean. they were kind of small, but they were really clean and the bettas looked pretty healthy to me.

mina: i would love to see a picture! my fish bad fin rot, mostly because he was a fishie on the road, or at least a carnival/boarwalk fish. hes growing back too!

DB_Diana_Jack_8: i hate betta's in small bowls, but my store was packed with all types of food and medicines and equipment,so i really cant blame them. at least they seemed like they really were taking care of them though.

I'll try and get one tomorrow. He's being grumpy tonight... =(

yeah i agree. I thought that atleast they were taking good care of them they had more of a chance of getting a new home.

:p He gets that way sometimes. He'll be all cheerful one moment, then his little froggie friend will eat his bloodworms and he'll get grumpy with me about it and hide in the plants. He's such a little dramaqueen

Just thought i'd say that I went to the pet store I told u about, Nature's Emporium today and took a look at the bettas. They are in small glass bowls, but out of the 10 male bettas they had, 7 of them had bubblenests in them. and not just small ones either, some of them covered half the top of the bowl. lol.

We have a store here in town called Aquatic Specialties that I don't even need to go to anymore (we all know I go to the stores that need some smackdown put on them for the way they treat their fish...), except to oogles at the beauties. They keep their bettas in little tiny clear solo cups with lids. Their water is always crystal clear. The bettas are always in perfect condition. Everyone in that store knows what they're doing and loves fish.

When I first went in there, I noticed a tank that had fish with ick in it. I pointed it out, and they thanked me for letting them know, but they were already into day 2 of treatment.

Since then I've been there a few times, but I don't really feel the need to go back because they're handling things themselves quite nicely.

I rescued a pleco from a friend of mine - when I went over to get him, I can safely say that she probably had not cleaned that tank in 6 months. You couldn't even tell what color the gravel was. And it was a 10G tank. Anyway - I got mr. plec out, got in my car and tried to figure out what I would do with this 5 or 6" long pleco in an ice cream pail. I quickly called over to Aquatic Specialties and asked if they would mind a drop-off. They were elated, and when I brought him in they acted like kids at Christmas. ;)

It's really nice to hear stories of GOOD fish places for a change.

my petco cleans them, medicates and im sure they feed they have betta bites near the sink, they are nice there too .the store in the mall doesnt sell bettas too well and its akward there is a black BF delta there noone has bought it yet and a orange guy like my flame who has been there for like a month! i want him so bad!!..the store in the mall feds and cleans them but rarely a female is kept in a dixe cup (i saved stary from that)
