I have a 75 gallon tank that has only 2 corys that need company. I know nothing about keeping loaches. Are they hard to keep? What strain is the hardiest? What size is recommended to get the best start with them? My PH is 7.2 with water on the soft side. Any suggestions to get me started will be appreciated.

How about getting a few cory friends for your two cories? They will do better in groups of 6 or more.

Note that there have been problems combining loaches and cories: cories often lose their eyes! The clown, zebra and yoyo loach have at least been known to do this, possibly other species as well. In general, it's not a good idea to combine loaches with cories and other slow catfish. There may be some less dangerous loaches, but I wouldn't know which species they are.

EDIT: Oh, how could I forget? One loach that gets on great with cories is the kuhli loach (Pangio sp.). :)

But khuli loaches are small and in a 75 gallon you may be looking for something slightly more substantial ;) Have you considered adding more cories (as already mentioned) to bring the number gradualy up to around 10 and then include a smallish pleco like a bristlenose or even 2 bristlenoses seeing as the tank is large enough? What other fish are you going to put in?

I would get more corys as already suggested

A side note
I have several species of loach with corys, in a 72 gal,
and have never had any problems.

Thanks for the input gang! So, I can move my corys to another tank. Now, wilth the tank able to accept loachs, please go back to my starting post. What do you recommend? How many? What tank mates?

I'd recomend yoyo loaches and botia angelicus,
both have great personallities and are very fun to watch.

Thanks, Wolf! I checked out the Yo-Yo Loaches and they seem to be the hardiest. I don't know if you can mix the Botia Angelicus with them.

I have
botia angelicus, yoyo, botia striata, clowns and skunks all in the same tank
They play together and often sleep together.
keeping yoyos and angelicus together will be ok IMHO

Khulis if you can get them. Right now they're hard to get ahold of but they're very peaceful if skittish fish.

I have found zebrea to be hardy and dont grow larger than 3" max. They are a bit skittish and shy though.
