I've got 8 fish in my aquarium, 3 guppys, 4 tetras and a beast of a loach, he's about 10cm long and we've had for about 18 months, but over the last month or so his behaviour has become eratic, he digs in the gravel and jumps out of the water sometimes as well. I'm wondering if he's maybe getting too big for my tank, its not a small, tank but i'm not sure how many gallons it is. If anyones got any advice or any ideas on what's up with him let me know please. I've become quite attached to the big fellow and i'd hate to think that he's suffering.

what are the dimensions of the tank in inches or cm, we need length width and depth, also could you get a picture of him, this will help us identify him.
to upload pictures follow this:
1) create a free account on PHOTOBUCKET
2) upload your pictures onto your account
3) copy the IMG tag and paste into your reply box, the picture will appear and at a suitable size for the site :good:

He's just a sucking loach, nothing special, a silvery grey with a black stripe running across him. The tank is 24"x 15" x 14" hope this helps.

Yes that looks like him, the description sounds like him as well, he hides under a log for most of the time and is very timid. I've never had a problem with him going for my other fish though and yes i was told that he wouldn't grow too much bigger than his tiny size when i bought him.

yer there often great fish when small its when they grow you have to watch them, i have heard many stories of them taking eyes out

He's done nothing like that, in fact he normally only behaves like this when one of my other fish are ill or dying. They're all healthy though. He was orginally one of 2 but he refused to let the smaller one eat and in the end we had to take the little one out. Have you any ideas ideas why he's being so eratic?

If he only acts like it when he thinks another fish is going to die it's probably because he's excited about his future meal.

have you changed his environment at all? what are you water stats? he could just be maturing

Its normally the guppys that eat the dead fish, as far as i can tell, they're all fine and not about to pop their clogs. The water is fine all levels normal. Was a bit bad about a month ago when we went on holiday and they suffered a bit of fin rot but all well on the mend now.

Got no test sticks left, on thursday they were all within their specific boundaries when i did a water change. I put stress coat and stress zyme in every change i do.

test sticks are very unreliable. you need to get a master test kit in liquid.
if you cant tell us your stats we cant help you. im assuming that you didnt test them as you cant tell us what they said.

Whats a liquid test kit, we use a dip stick then just match the colours up so they're all in the green.
